  • Guide to installing Stata with Windows on Amazon EC2

    Hi all,

I've written up a simple guide to installing Stata with Windows on Amazon EC2 - please see the attached link. My goal is to walk first-time cloud users through the specific steps needed to get going, because I was not able to find anything like this already on the web. I think this should really reduce the barrier to entry for cloud computing and help researchers get long-running or memory-intensive analysis off of their laptops and onto cloud hardware.

I have only been able to try this out from my Mac laptop, so if there are any improvements to the instructions that could be made for Windows users I'd be glad to incorporate those. I'm also planning to add in some screenshots and/or a screencast when I have a chance. Any other suggestions or feedback would be much appreciated as well.

    Cheers,
    Chris

Thanks for the link! I'm still having trouble logging on via the Remote Desktop. Have you thought to update your post? One last question: do you find that running Stata on the EC2 cloud is significantly faster than say your MacBook Pro? I'm asking because my MBP is dreadfully slow with the regression I'm running (like days to complete). I'm hoping EC2 can reduce the run time to minutes...

          Hi all,
quick question on this guide, novice in working with AWS here. How do I install Stata once connected through remote with the EC2 server? Can I just run the .exe file within the remote? I tried that but it would not open the Stata .exe installation file.
          Thanks,
          Marcel
