• Estimating descretionary accruals using size-based peer groups per country (Ecker et al. 2013)

    Dear,

For my thesis i am running a difference-in-difference design for Danish mandatory joint audits and other Scandinavian countries. Mandatory joint audit were mandatory till 2005. Every year before 2005 is the pre time period and after the post time period. Denmark is the treatment country and the others are control countries. My data consists of financial data (annual) between 2003-2007. I want to estimate discretinary accruals using the modified jones model as a proxy for audit quality. However, instead of using industry SIC codes, i would like to use size-based peer groups based on lagged assets. I would like to create 4 or 5 peer groups per country per year. But i don't know how to do that.

I've already calculated lagged total assets in variable: lagta. I know i still need to create the PRE- and POST variable as well as Treatement and Control variable.

Could somebody tell me how to create size-based peer groups per country?

    Welcome to Statalist.

You have accidentally posted your topic in Statalist's Mata Forum, which is used for discussions of Stata's Mata language, which is different than Stata's command language, and different than Stata's matrix commands. Your question will see a more appropriate and much larger audience if you post it in Statalist's General Forum.

Also, if you have not already done so, take a look at the Statalist FAQ linked to from the top of the page, as well as from the Advice on Posting link on the page you used to create your post. Note especially sections 9-12 on how to best pose your question. It is particularly helpful to copy commands and output from your Stata Results window and paste them into your Statalist post using code delimiters
and
, and to use the dataex command to provide sample data, as described in section 12 of the FAQ.

The more you help others understand your problem, the more likely others are to be able to help you solve your problem.

Be sure to use the dataex command to present example data. If you are running version 17, 16 or a fully updated version 15.1 or 14.2, dataex is already part of your official Stata installation. If not, run ssc install dataex to get it. Either way, run help dataex and read the simple instructions for using it. dataex includes complete information about aspects of the data that are often critical to answering your question but cannot be seen from tabular displays or screenshots. It also makes it possible for those who want to help you to create a faithful representation of your example to try out their code, which in turn makes it more likely that their answer will actually work in your data. For example, your data is impossible to read into Stata without first placing quotation marks around the muilti-word company names, something that few who are asked to volunteer their time to help you are willing to do.

When asking for help with code, always show example data. When showing example data, always use the dataex command.
