Atypical " character in Stata command window

Hello everyone,

I seem to have enabled some kind of feature where Stata replaces what should be a " (regular double quote) with a small bar-like character (i.e. similar to a | ) in the Stata command window when I'm typing. Upon executing the line, the | symbol is replaced by a “ (i.e. the "smart" beginning double quote). I can restart the program and it returns to normal, but I'm more interested in knowing how I activated this and what the purpose is.

One thing you could try is to reset the Stata windows environment back to a factory default. From the dropdown menus I do the following:

Edit > Preferences > Load Preference Set > Widescreen Layout

This may get you back to what you expect. But, it will override other options you may have selected to customize your copy of Stata.
