  • Stata failing to "paste" text into command and programming windows

Similar to a much-earlier thread, I have a problem where Stata 13 will not do "paste" text into the command window or program window, via Ctrl keys or via menus ("copy", "paste") --
but only if a browser is opened up -- Internet Explorer 11 or Google Chrome. Curiously, if I close a browser the "paste" ability often returns, then goes away if I then open a browser, etc.
I've reinstalled browsers, removed software I thought might be adding to a conflict (Java...). Only Stata produces the "paste" failure, all other software pastes fine (Microsoft Excel, Word, Notepad, EViews statistical software, TeXWorks. Someone from Stata tech support kindly had a look, over the past week (& we ran some diagnostics), but haven't heard back in awhile so am thinking they reached a dead end. Any ideas?

I am having the same problem and have just made progress isolating it. For me too, it only happens when a browser is open...AND when my anti-virus software Webroot SecureAnywhere is running in the background. So I think the real conflict is with Webroot. It happens even if I disable the Webroot browser add-on. But if I shut down Webroot proper the problem goes away completely. Are you using Webroot too? Or if some other security software, does shutting it down help?

Further progress: it is SecureAnywhere's Identity Shield that is interfering. I think it must intercept copy/pasting to prevent malicious software from grabbing passwords and such. This can be turned off in by going into Identity Protection in the Webroot home screen--but I'm not sure it's a good idea!

Possibly Stata needs to get its apps whitelisted by Webroot--I'm out of my depth here.

I don't have a solution to Scott's question, but while we are on the clipboard issues, there seems to be a very old behavior (since Stata 10 or earlier) that the clipboard is cleared when Stata is closed, which is very annoying. I expect the clipboard content not be destroyed by closing Stata. Some programs ask to clear the buffer if the contents is really huge (MBs) to save memory, but such behavior is not warranted when the buffer contains just a few text commands.

Aha! This worked for me. On the SecureAnywhere main screen, click the gear icon to the right of "Identity Protection". Then click the "Application Protection" tab. Find your Stata executable in the list and switch it from Deny to Protect.

Yes, this is a known Webroot issue that occurs with several different applications. The solution is found at the Webroot discussion board below:
