  • Setting editor to automatically update to reflect changes made externally

For some tasks, I find it advantageous to edit my do files in VS Code. Previously when I did so, Stata would ask me if I wanted to (from memory), reload those changes.

It is no longer asking me and is either not updating to match changes made externally or doing so inconsistently.

Can anyone give me guidance on how to set Stata to automatically update the editor to reflect externally made changes, noting that I may have clicked something wrong to tell it to do otherwise?

    Thank you!

I eventually found the answer to my own question. I'll note it here in case anyone else has a similar challenge in the future.

Under Stata's general preferences, there is a pane for "Windows". Go to it and select "Do-file Editor" from the list on the left.

Go to the "Open and save" pane. Click the option "Automatically reload when a file changes on disk" to on (checked).

    Click the "Okay" button.
