  • Issue with “Create” Button in Graphs > Twoway Graphs on Mac (M2)

I am currently experiencing an issue with Stata on my MacBook (Apple M2 chip). Specifically, in the Graphs > Twoway Graphs menu, the “Create” button and some other related options are either unresponsive or not functioning as expected.
I have already tried the following steps:
    • Reinstalled Stata
    • Restarted my system
    However, the issue persists.
    Could you kindly advise on:
    • Any known compatibility issues between Stata and macOS on M2 chips
    • Additional troubleshooting steps I can try
    • Whether there are updates or patches addressing this issue
    For reference, I am using:
    • Stata version: [Stata/SE 18.0]
    • macOS version: [macOS Tahoe 26.0]
Thank you for your support. I look forward to your guidance on resolving this problem.

I can confirm that I have the same issue. I have tried both Stata/MP 16.1 and StataNow/MP 19.5. I am also on macOS Tahoe 26.0, on Apple M2 Pro.

I don't use the menu for graphs, so I don't know how long this problem has existed, but my first guess would be that it might be to do with the new version of the operating system (macOS Tahoe).

You might want to write to Stata Technical Services about this.

Just to help bisect, I am using StataNow/MP 19.5 on Sequoia 15.6.1 on an M2 Mini, and do not experience this issue. So Hemanshu's guess at a Tahoe incompatibility seems like a good one.

We've confirmed the issue. macOS Tahoe changed the behavior of how radio button groups work which Stata has been using for years in its programmable dialogs. Dialogs and tabs within the Dialogs, Graphics, and Statistics menus that contain radio buttons are affected by this change in behavior in that a radio button group will prevent any clicks from being passed through to other controls.

We have fixed the issue and updates will be coming very soon for releases of Stata 18 and newer. Older versions of Stata are no longer officially updated but please contact Stata tech support if you're using an older version of Stata than Stata 18 and are affected by this change in macOS Tahoe.

I had something similar on Stata17 MP and Stata16 MP. When I try to export to a CVS the "save as" button doesn't work at all. MacOS Tahoe, M4

I’ve also noticed that after updating macOS to Tahoe, all my (loved) customized dialog boxes (.dlg files) have stopped working correctly.

In my own custom dialogs, only the last group of radio buttons works — all previous ones appear but are no longer clickable. I’ve confirmed that this happens even with very simple dialogs that worked perfectly before the update.

I am also experiencing the same issues with buttons and controls not responding properly in dialog boxes since the macOS Tahoe update that the other users reported before, so it looks like a broader problem with Stata’s dialog interface on this version of macOS.

I’ve already tried the usual steps (discard, simplifying the dialog, reordering controls, etc.), but the behavior persists. When the radio groups are reordered, only the one that appears last in the file works.

Could someone from StataCorp please confirm whether this issue has been identified and whether a fix is already included or planned in an upcoming update?

            Thank you in advance.

Also, Stata 15 does not work any more in Tahoe.

Please contact tech support for unofficial hot fixes. We do know that macOS 26 changed several things that broke functionality that has existed for years and you should be aware that updating your OS has the potential to break older software that’s no longer being updated. We only support current Stata and one release back but we try to make older versions of Stata work (unofficially) on the new OS when feasible. macOS ties its development tools to each release of macOS so we have to have not only the OS that we built older versions of Stata with but also a Mac that can still run the older development tools. We were able to work around the changes that were made to macOS 26 that broke older versions of Stata but we will not be able to do this indefinitely. If you still wish to continue using older versions of Stata in the future, you should probably not update your OS as there’s a strong possibility that it will no longer run and we may not be able to update it to run.

Just to follow up — I contacted Stata Technical Support, and they confirmed that this issue was fixed in the September 23, 2025 update.

                  They suggested running

                  Code:
                  update all
and that completely solved the problem.

I had assumed that Stata’s automatic update check at startup would have detected and installed the fix, but apparently it didn't. As a non-expert user, I didn’t realize that I needed to run the update all command manually.

Many thanks to Derek from StataCorp for the help, and hopefully this note helps others who run into the same issue.
