  • Issue with egen value label when combine groups- odd results on the assignation of variables for the new variable-Juan

    Dear stata,

I need some help. I am using egen to combine two categorical variables to obtain one variable with the combinations. I followed the instructions, but for some odd reason, stata is not assigning a different number for each new category.

Any reason why these are odd results? I am using STATA 16.1 and I have already updated it.

    Many thanks

    Juan

I think you are confused by the "label" option you included; you have, I believe, exactly what you asked for and if you use the describe command, as in
    Code:
    d depression1
you will see that you have a value label called "depression1" - it is what you are seeing when you use tabulate

if you try tabulate with the "nolabel" option you will see that you have 15 different values - as expected
