  • Decimal places in created scales.

    I have been creating scales using either alpha - ie alpha inclc2 inclc6 inclc7 inclc8 inclc13, gen (incclimnorms) or gen - ie gen inclclimnorms = (inclc2 + inclc6 + inclc7 + inclc8 + inclc13)/5

Either creates a summative scale, but the resulting variable has only one decimal place. This is based on a sample of 2000 people and we want to use them for norms, so we need the result to at least four decimal places. I have searched (and asked) in vain for the answer to this. Surely there is a simple command to make the software provide this. All other calculations, coefficients etc seem to be to many decimal places. Any clues?

Can you show us example values of cinclc2 inclc6 inclc7 inclc8 and inclc13 and inclclimnorms using dataex. Type in Stata help dataex to see how to do that. I have several suspicions of what might be going on, but i need that info to know which of these suspicions apply to your case.
