  • How to use dirifit command to estimate Dirichlet Distribution followed by xtreg command

    Hello, everyone; I have state-level panel data comprising 50 US states from 2005 to 2022. This dataset has three dependent variables: proportions of state financial support for student financial aid (stfinaid), general appropriations to colleges (st_approp), and amount given to colleges through grants and contracts (st_gnc). In each observation, the sum of the three dependent variables is equal to 1 (i.e., the state's total support for higher education).

    I have five independent variables, including economic freedom (econfree), performance-based funding (pbf), total private college enrollment (totenpvt), legislative professionalism(lp), and 18 to 24 years population (pop18to24). Here, I have shown data for only 20 states over three years, from 2005 to 2007.

    I want to transform my dependent variables to Dirichlet Distribution using STATA’s ‘dirifit’ command. I have already read STATA’s help and Maarten Buis’s two presentations (2006 and 2010) on analyzing proportions, but I am still unsure how to use the ‘dirifit’ command. After using ‘dirifit’ command, I will apply fixed effects using the ‘xtreg’ command.

    Could someone kindly guide me on how to use ‘dirifit’ command followed by ‘xtreg’ command? I have been using 'xtreg' but I don't how to use after 'dirifit.'

    Sorry, but I don't follow even in very broad terms what you want to do.

    dirifit from SSC is about modelling a set of outcomes in terms of predictors. (I am listed as an author but that is a courteous gesture from Maarten Buis who started from a different command with a related but different purpose.)

    I wouldn't describe it as being about transformation of dependent variables to a Dirichlet distribution. There isn't any transformation.

    More importantly, xtreg has quite different flavour, as it focuses on single outcomes.

    These commands could be complementary for your purposes but I can't understand any sense in which one should be run before another, let alone being a prerequisite.

      Thank you, Nick. I am sorry for my ambiguous question. I want to model my outcome variables in terms of predictors. Then, I will use 'xtreg' on each predictor. I intend to do so because, in another state-level study, the researcher used the 'dirifit' command before independently performing fixed-effects analysis using STATA's 'areg' command on his three outcome variables measured as proportions. My apologies if I am still vague.

        I don't think your question is ambiguous. It's just unclear to me how two separate commands are to be linked in any sense.

        Even here, I wonder whether you mean apply xtreg to each outcome (not each predictor). Unfortunately, much of the point is that a set of proportions is a multivariate outcome.

        I imagine that Maarten Buis will join the discussion at some point. He's not only the lead author of dirifit but also immensely more experienced than I am with these analyses.

          This looks like panel data, and dirifit (or fmlogit) are not made for that case. Unfortunately, I cannot help you further.
