Differencing the years and making it consistent

I was given a task to familiarize myself on coding the differencing throughout the years and making it consistent. here are the exact words "be familiar with conceptual / coding differences across the years, and what was required to make them consistent. Document what was needed to make these consistent" Does anyone here know what I should do or what should I study? Thank you!

That said, I have no idea what is meant here. I think you need to address questions to your teachers.

You need to ask the person who gave you that task. It could be many things, but most likely you need to understand your data in order to answer it. So that is not something we can help you with.

Sorry for the confusion; this is not a school assignment. I was tasked by my boss to examine the educational expenditure over the years. I was then instructed to familiarize myself with the coding for comparing data across different years.
