  • Prevent order of variables in browser from resetting

If you want to browse a subset of variables, they will show up in the data window in the order that they are in the 'br' command. However, if you enter any command in the Stata command window, the data window will revert the order of variables back to their default in the dataset. Is there any way of preventing this automatic re-ordering?

This seems to be a bug. If you close the browse window then reenter the same -browse- command, you get the desired behaviour again. If you keep that window open, like you say, the variable order reverts to that of the dataset and cannot be overridden by any -browse- command. Since -browse- is offered as an alternative to -list-, I would regard the behaviour of not honouring the customized variable order as the bug. You should report this to Stata Technical services.
