I am trying to code for teacher retention.

I have teacher data that includes teacher id year. I'm trying to figure out which teachers are retained from year to year. Is there an easy way to do this?

I am guessing that you only have data for years the teacher is retained. See https://www.stata.com/support/faqs/d...ged-variables/ and notice there is one example of using a lead rather than a lag, If the teacher is not retained, the leaded value will be missing. See also https://www.stata.com/manuals13/dby.pdf for the -by- prefix option.

Yes the teacher data only includes teachers for that year so it would be retained teachers and new teachers.
