  • Stata 18 Do-file Editor: need multiple windows

As I remember, earlier Stata versions allowed the user to have multiple 'Do-file Editor' windows open at the same time, so I could compare two do-files side-by-side, for example. In version 18, clicking on 'New Do-file Editor' opens a new tab but cannot have multiple windows open. Now I have to open Windows Notepad or similar if I need to see both do-files side-by-side. I hope this can be fixed in an update/new version.

You can control this behavior. Open your do-file editor and then open the Edit drop-down menu. Select Preferences. When the Do-file Editor preferences window opens, click on the Advanced tab. About half way down, uncheck the box that says "Open documents in tabs instead of windows." Click on Apply and then close the window with OK.

If it's of interest, you can also have two files open in either horizontal or vertical panes within one Do File Editor window. Open both files in the same window, then drag the tab heading for one of the files and release it into the text area, and select your preference for tiling panes.
