  • Importing Excel File First Row Variable Name Problem

    Hi,

When I'm importing an excel file into stata and select make first row variable name, I get some of the variable names but the others are just Excel letters such as A, B, C, D.

I attached a few images below to show the problem.

Is there a solve to this issue?

    Thanks so much.

The "variable names" in the Excel file in columns C through I are all the same, or at least the same up to the first 32 characters. We cannot see the full names, nor the full labels in what is shown. You will have to either rename them in the Excel file (which is undesirable because it doesn't leave an audit trail) or, better, rename them in Stata. Presumably these are population (and dwelling) counts in different places or time periods. So pick names that are short, and include the distinctive parts (which currently are at the end) near the beginning.
