How to generate a variable connected to countries

Hi!

I have a basic question. I'm using the ESS with individual-level survey data and intend to make multilevel models. I have information about how the countries score at a country-level variable. How do I create such a variable so that it is clear that the variable is connected to the different countries? For instance, Germany should have the value 7 at this variable and Sweden 3.

Typically you have such national level data in another dataset, and than use merge to bring it into the individual level dataset.
