Generate new variable

Hello. I have a string variable called 'region' and I want to make a new variable that only includes certain regions (in this case the regions of France). Afterwards I want to create a new variables which contains the distance of those region to another place. Can somebody help me with this problem I cannot figure out? Thank you in advance!
