  • opening v11 do files on same PC with new v17

I checked forums and Google. Could not find the right answer. In short, I had Stata 11 on wife's PC and Stata 17. SE on my PC. I created a bunch of do files on v17. My PC crashed and I installed Stata 17.0 SE on my wife's PC. The do files in Dropbox however show up as v11 files and wont open with Stata 17.0 today. I had version 17 written in the do file up top when I created them.

I can of course access the v17 installed on my work PC and access the do files after the holidays. But I would love to be able to work today from home.

Figured it out. I right clicked the file and changed it to open with Stata 17 SE.

Future readers may note that do files are nothing more than plain text files with a do extension instead of txt. They can be read by any version of Stata or your favorite text editing program.

The problem described above is the operating system's default assigned program for opening do files, and this can always be changed.
