  • Collapse variables by country, category, year

    Hi!

    I have the following data (dataex below) and I just want to confirm if I am doing the right approach given what I want to find. Initially, I want to group all variables in the dataex by country, category (tech_intensity), and year. Therefore, I did the following command

     collapse Establishments Employment share_emp Wages OutputINDSTAT4 ValueAdded GrossFixed r_valworker r_output_worker lval_per_worker ln_1980  perc_wanted2, by(country1 tech_intensity year)
    The main purpose is to later create variables for each of the grouping variables .For instance, r_valworker_high, r_valworker_low, r_valworker_medium, ln_1980_high, ln_1980_low, ln_1980_medium... I do this by doing the following (for the variable share_emp)

     by year country1 (tech_intensity), sort: assert tech_intensity == _n
    by year country1(tech_intensity): gen share_emp_high = share_emp[3]
    by year country1(tech_intensity): gen share_emp_medium = share_emp[2]
    by year country1(tech_intensity): gen share_emp_low = share_emp[1]
    And, at the end, I group all variables (collapse) by country1 and year. My end goal is to merge this new dataset with World Development Indicators (WDI) data... Am I doing the right steps? Thank you very much!

    Based on your words describing what you want to do, the code looks like it is probably appropriate.

    However, the example data you show is not compatible with the code as written. The first -collapse- command contains numerous variables that do not appear in the example data. And the subsequent commands designed to calculate employment shares will not work because, in the example data, tech_intensity == 1 for all observations. Assuming this is because you have shown an example of your data that is not adequately representative of your full data set and that the full data set does not suffer from these or other limitations, you can proceed.

      The dataex shows the initial dataset after applying the first collapse. This is the dataex (that is, after the second set of lines). The initial dataex is just an example. Is there a way to make dataex more comprehensive?

          Is there a way to make dataex more comprehensive?
          I think the issue is not how to make it more comprehensive but how to make it more representative. The -dataex- output in #1 shows data whose observations are at the level of some entities, perhaps firms or industries? But the relevant questions here arise once we get to the level of countries and years. So I would have first -collapsed- all of that data -by (country1 year tech_density)-. Then, if that's a small enough number of observations, I'd run the -dataex- from that. If it's still a huge data set, I'd pick out a few countries and a few years and restrict -dataex- to the observations with those. So something like:

          Code:
          dataex if inrange(country1, 1, 4) & inrange(year, 1980, 1985)
          That way you would have 4 countries x 5 years x 3 technologies = 60 observations that give a good representation of the structure of the entire data. Crucially, you would have reasonable representation of all of the key variables in a data set that fits neatly within the default -dataex- output of 100 observations.

            I tried using inrange even for narrower interval of countries and year but my Stata states that sizelimit is violated... This is the first summary statistics before the first collapse....

              I don't see why that would happen. Remember that in #5 I said to apply this to the data set after you apply your -collapse Establishments Employment share_emp Wages OutputINDSTAT4 ValueAdded GrossFixed r_valworker r_output_worker lval_per_worker ln_1980 perc_wanted2, by(country1 tech_intensity year)- command. At that point there will be only one observation per country1,year, and tech_intensity combination.
