problem updating ado files

I am running Stata SE 16.1. On my laptop if I issue either of the following commands:
adoupdate, update

OR
ado update, update

I get the following error message:

stata.trk file invalid header
r(610);

I realize there is probably a simple way to solve the problem (which does not occur with the same version of Stata on my home and my office computer) but I would appreciate your help.
