    Hello all,

I am using STATA17, and I have a big (270k obs) dta file. I am trying to merge two dta files, but keep getting the error msg. I was not getting this when i was using my laptop, and now i am using my work computer (new) and all the files are in my personal OneDrive. I've never seen this problem before. Can anyone help? Thank you.

file C:\Users\Mycomputer~1\AppData\Local\Temp\ST_4168_0 00001.tmp cannot be modified or erased; likely
cause is read-only directory or file

        Olivia:
I cannot say, as I'm still with Stata 16.
I would ask Stata Tech support for skilled guidance.
        Kind regards,

Indeed, when i use my PC at home (STATA 15) i had no problem, but it's only when I am using my work computer (STATA17). I guess i will have to the merging home, and only work with merged data at work...

          I would really appreciate it!

trivial second thought: is your Stata 17 copy fully updated?
            Kind regards,

              Carlo,

I tried checking for updates and I get this message. Hmm I am starting to wonder there is something wrong with my work computer (which i have access to as of yesterday)...

              . update query
              (contacting http://www.stata.com)
              file C:\Users\Mycomputer~1\AppData\Local\Temp\ST_4168_0 00001.tmp already exists
http://www.stata.com did not respond or is not a valid update site

                Olivia:
                strange indeed.
I would definitely forward the issue (along with the result of your -update- attempt) to Stata tech support and inform your IT manager about it.
                Kind regards,
                Carlo
