Spell duration panel

I have spell data of the type

Person	Month	Employed	Other variables
1	Jan 2012	0
1	Feb 2012	1
1	Mar 2012	1
1	Apr 2012	0

I would like to create some spell variables, specifically how long the current employment oder unemployment spell is lasting and when it start. Any tips?
