    Yes. There is a Stata PDF manual that comes with your Stata installation--you already have it (unless you are using a version older than 11). Launch Stata and click on the Help dropdown menu. Then select PDF Documentation. It will open in your PDF viewing software. For starters, read the Getting Started [GS] and User's Guide [U] volumes. These cover all the commands that are used routinely in data management and analysis with Stata. It's a long read, but the time will be amply repaid. You won't remember everything, but you will learn enough that you'll generally know what commands to use, and then you can just refer to the help files for any details of syntax.

    Also worth reading are the sections of the manual on -egen- and the chapter on -functions-. The easiest way to find those is to type -help egen- in the command window. The help file will open in the Viewer. Near the top of the page there will be a blue link "View complete PDF manual entry" that will take you directly to the -egen- chapter. Similarly -help functions- will get you a link to the chapter on functions.
