      That might work; but really, you should just update the software. It is free. Spending time to figure out how to fix stuff that StataCorp has already fixed is usually not time spent well.

        Maybe a queer personal habit. I just want to detect what caused the problem. In fact the code still has some problem in identifying and loading worksheet (if worksheets are named in non-English language). I actually have abandoned it and do use your -xls2dta- in practical works.

          Nothing wrong with that. More broadly, nothing wrong with solving problems that have been solved if you do that for the purpose of learning.

          Usually, the language itself is not the problem. It has almost certainly to do with the support of Unicode and/or specific encodings.
