  • Help me I m new with STATA

Hi! I m at the beginning of this software and I have to resolve this exercise. Can someone help me?
"Generate a new variable for birth cohorts named “coho” and categorize the year of birth into cohorts with each cohort covering five years (e.g. 1944-1948, 1949-1953, etc.). An exception is the youngest cohort, which spans only over three birth years."

How can i write it? And then to find that years?

    Thank you in advance!

    Francesca:
    welcome to this forum.
As you might be aware of (please, see the FAQ if that were not the case), queries related to school assignments are not encouraged on this forum, especially when the poster seems to ask for the solution of what should be a fair challenge between students and their teacher.
Things may be different if the poster sketchs something in Stata by herself/himself, post what she/he typed and what Stata gave her/him back (via CODE delimiters, please) and try to elicit the opinion of interested listers on what she/he did.
I do not think that the main issue here is with Stata, but with statistics: years that bound each age cohort are reported as data of the exercise you're asked to carry out.
That said, you may want to take a look at -help table- and -fvvarlist-.
    Kind regards,
    Carlo
