  • Update-all: r(691) I/O error

    When I started STATA today, the program said that new update is available. So I let STATA download updates. But I get the following error message. I still have 125GB free memory available in my computer. I don't know where the problem is coming from. Could you help?

    . update all
    (contacting http://www.stata.com)

    downloading documentation files ... I/O error
    r(691);

    Search of official help files, FAQs, Examples, SJs, and STBs

    [P] error . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Return code 691
    I/O error
    A filesystem error occurred during input or output. This
    typically indicates a hardware or operating system failure,
    although it is possible that the disk was merely full and
    this state was misinterpreted as an I/O error.

    It may just mean a hiatus in communication. I would just try again. If that's not the right answer, you should contact StataCorp Technical Support. They may want much more information on your set-up than you give here.

    We can rule out Stata penalising you for not spelling its name as approved. https://www.statalist.org/forums/help#spelling

      Michael,

      Were you able to resolve the problem, and if so what was the solution? I am having the exact same problem with the 17 Dec 2018 update. After "downloading documentation files" gets to about 90% complete, the process hangs and eventually Stata issues an I/O error. Previous updates installed fine. I have been in contact with Stata technical support about the problem but so far they don't have a resolution.

        Yes, the problem was resolved. I think it was an internet connection issue. I moved to another place with new WIFI, and it seems to be working all right.
