  • Create timeline chart using a categorical variable on y-axis

I have unbalanced global firm-level data. I want to create a chart that has country(hq) (there are around 150 countries) as y-axis and year as x-axis (1997-2018). I would like the timeline to indicate whether I have data for a specific country in that specific year. Also, I would like to add the data level for each country which shows the maximum number of companies for that country.

In addition, one of my concerns is that since I have so many countries in my y-axis, the graph would not be readable.

Could someone help me with this problem/

    Thank you!

You didn't get a quick answer. You'll increase your chances of a useful answer by following the FAQ on asking questions - provide Stata code in code delimiters, readable Stata output, and sample data using dataex.

I think what you're asking is a bit tricky - I don't know how you do 150 rows in a chart that is not several pages long.

I suspect you might find it easier to do this as a table rather than a graph. Look at the table commands - it should be easy to have countries as rows and years as columns. If you only have one observation per country-year, putting frequency into the contents of the table would work.
