  • Stata crashes when I copy and paste from Excel to Data Editor

I've recently changed my laptop from a 2010 to a 2018 MacBook Pro and now Stata keeps crashing every time I try to copy and paste from Excel (2011) to the data editor in Stata which it didn't do previously. Can you please help me? The only thing I've changed is the laptop, not the programs.

Actually it only seems to be when I say yes "Use the first row as variable names". Any ideas?

I have no advice to offer that directly answers your question. Sounds like a problem for StataCorp tech support or Apple tech support.

But, have you tried bringing the data in using the -import excel- command instead of pasting into the data editor? That would, at the least, be a workaround for you. Indeed, I would go farther and say that you shouldn't be pasting data into the editor in the first place unless you're just playing around with the data. For serious work, you need an audit trail of what you're doing, and pasting into the data editor doesn't leave one.

I'd second Clyde's comments, and add that it's all too easy to miss a column or a row when cutting and pasting data, and unfortunately not realize it until much later.
