What Stata does for unbalanced panel data running?

Hello, I am Devi, a college student that is currently doing a thesis research.
I want to ask regarding of what Stata does when it runs unbalanced panel data?
I already know that Stata can automatically treat this unbalanced panel data running, but what does this 'automatic treatment' actually do?
