  • Increase/customize size of value labels

I am working with a dataset that has part qualitative (categorical variables), part numeric variables. The value labels of the categorical variables are in some cases a bit long. When I tab by categories, only a part of the category labels gets displayed. Remeber, these variables are in numeric in format, while they have labels. Is their a way to customize/ increase the length?

( I am not talking about the length of the variable name, rather I am looking for a way to increase the length of a value label displayed in tables. It gets worse when I use the table commands with more than 3 or 4 variables. Same is the case for tabm for multiple responses. I am still learning Stata and have been using it only for the last one 7 months at work.

As a specific example, a simple tabulate with a category variable with another variable gives me labels up to 21 characters with spaces and special characters only.

Please read the FAQ and act according to the recommendations.

In some situations (listing, for example), there can be some work around to present large label values. That said, considering such labels demand much more space than large numbers (which can be rounded or scaled) the fate of providing crossed tables with a bunch of large-labeled variables is predictively doomed. In the best scenario, we’d reap unfriendly tables.
