  • Calculating life expectancy at specific age if I have date of birth and date of death, data is only for dead people.

I have a sample of 18,000 records - I have date of birth, date of death, and several other indicators. The sample only includes people who have actually died already.
My task is to calculate life expectancy at different ages, most importantly at age 60 for men and 55 for women for all of the cohorts. The earliest cohorts is 1930 and last is 1965. Is this possible given the data I have? Thanks.

    Welcome to Statalist.

I would say that you cannot accomplish what you hope to with your data. What you have is much like asking "I have data on 18,000 coin tosses, but only for those that turned up heads, can we determine the probability of tossing a head?"

Thank you - I suspect I will be a frequent visitor here
Thank you for your answer. I had the feeling this was the issue at hand. On top of the fact that I only have dead people, the data spans across 2013-2017. I will go back to the source of the data and see if I can get a complete sample of live and dead people. Thanks again.
