  • National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) Insurance Type

Hi all, I am working with NHIS (National health interview survey) data in Stata and want to be able to extract insurance type percentages for different age groups (i.e. 11-17, 18-25). It seems in the sample child and sample adult questionnaires that they don't ask insurance type, but it is included in the general family/household section. Does anyone have advice on how to separate out insurance type for different age groups in NHIS?

    Thank you,
    Nina

    Welcome to Statalist, Nina.

I do not use NHIS data, but my belief based on the use of similar data is that the insurance type reported in the household section applies to everyone in the family.

So the general advice would be that you need to
    1. extract the family identifier and insurance type from the general family/household section
    2. merge this extract with the sample child and adult observations, matching on the family identifier which will also be present in the child and adult observations

      William,

Thank you so much for your fast reply and your help. Based on your suggestions I was able to make a person-level identifier (combining multiple identifiers), merge and then run my analysis. Thank you again.
