  • Open stata 14 do file in stata 15

    Hey all,

Due to a hard drive failure, my company replaced my laptop, I was using stata 14, the new laptop has 15 version ,and windows 10 system.

I double click on my do file, it asks me to download an app, to open the file. Does any one have similar experience?

I can not open the do file, from double click, unless i lauch stata 15 first, then open it.

    Thanks,

    Rochelle

Sounds like whoever installed the software failed to register the appropriate file associations with the operating system. I'm unsure of the details in Windows 10, but you should be able to browse for the Stata app and make it the default to open that file type (rather than "download an app").

I have a similar issue. I have both Stata 14 and 15 on my Windows 10 and can't get windows to associate the STATA files with 15. Every time I double-click on a file it's being opened with V14.
      Any ideas?

Right-click, and from the context menu pick "Open with ..." Then navigate to the new version of Stata and pick it as the default to open.

That's my usual approach but STATA 15 does not show up on that list. Clicking on searching for other apps on the computer allows me to find V15 but it does not set the default for it, it just opens the file with V15 once.

Or, from within Stata, try edit / preferences / reset file associations.

Or, if still desperate, See https://techforluddites.com/windows-...opening-files/

Personally I often use the control panel option, e.g. Start/ Control Panel / Default Programs/ Associate a file type...

Thanks Richard. The Stata method would be much better than my initial suggestion, because there are many file types to associate with Stata: .smcl, .sthlp, etc etc.

The ones it resets are .dta, .do, .gph, and .smcl.

You might want to do different associations for .do or .ado if you prefer using different editors.

                      Hi all,

I have the same issue. I have Windows 10 64x. I installed Stata 15 MP. DTA file has been linked to new Stata 15 MP. But DO file isn't. I double-clicked a do file to open it but then it shows up this which does not have the checkbox "Always use this app to open .do files"

Also, edit / preferences / reset file associations also didn't work.

Is this a known issue? What should I do? Thank you.
