  • How to convert MLwin (.wsz) files in Stata (.dta) files

    Dear Forum Members,

Recently, I came across a MLwin file which I'd like to convert to .dta.

I searched on the Web, to no avail.

This site from IDRE showed a blank page.

Also, this site from IDRE redirects to another page, with no information as well.

I found a program (runmlwin), well, to run MLwin from within Stata, but I just want to convert a .wsz into .dta file without having to install MLwin and learning its whereabouts..

I searched ".wsz" in this Forum, but there is no post about that. Typing MLwin as a keyword gave back a couple of posts, but they were mostly about other topics.

If this is not possible, other options would make me happy, such as converting in .csv, .sav, .xls, .RData.

    Thank you in advance.

If you do have to install MLwiN, the following may give you hope that once done it will be straightforward to export your data from it directly into a Stata dataset. The cited reference says the export format is Stata versions 5-12.

Saving data for use in other packages

MLwiN gives users the option to save their data as an SPSS (*.sav), Stata (*.dta), SAS transport (*.xpt) or Minitab (*.mtw) file. This can be done by choosing 'Save worksheet As', or for a subset of the data 'Export...', from the File menu and then selecting the relevant option from the drop-down box, or by using a command. Full documentation is available in the MLwiN Manual supplement in section 6.

Thank you for the reply as well for the information, William. I hoped to convert it to dta without having to install MLwiN. Anyway, if there is no alternative, I guess I’ll do it.
      Best regards,

      Marcos

I was going to make my usual suggestion of stat/transfer, but even stat/transfer doesn't seem to support mlwin.

Thank you for the information, Richard.

So far, it seems there is no alternative, unless installing the program, precisely what I wished to avoid...
          Best regards,
