  • Panel Data

    Dear Sir/Ma'am

I am working of IHDS (Indian Human Development Survey) data set for two rounds. It is considered to be a panel survey with attrition of 15 percent from first to second round survey. I intend to create a panel data set by combining two survey data by unique household ID and year.

I have tried both "merge" and "append" command available in STATA, however, I am
unable to reach to a desired results.

I would appreciate if you can help in this.

Note: I intend to create a balance panel data set.

It is hard to comment on that question, as we don't know what your data looks like now, what you want your data to look like after you are done, what you tried exactly, what you got from that exactly, and why you thought that was not what you wanted.

        Abu:
as an aside to Maarten's interesting remarks, before considering the creation of a balanced panel datasets, I would investigate whether the 15% attrition is informative or not.
        Kind regards,

You'll increase your chances of a useful answer if you follow the FAQ on asking questions - provide Stata code in code delmiters, Stata output, and sample data using dateex. Try to simplify the code and example to what you need to illustrate your problem.

There is no way to help you with a merge without some understanding of what is going on. Saying you don't get what you want tells us nothing about what is happening (we don't even know what you want).

For the most part, Stata procedures do not require balanced data in panel analyses.
