  • General: Script/sources to convert firstname to gender variable

I would like to know if someone has experience with the conversion of (a really long list of) firstnames to gender and how to integrate that into Stata.
I see some databases online that offer probabilities for a gender of a certain first name. But I do not know how good they are which offer is trustworthy and how well they can be integrated into a Stata routine. Does anyone has experience with these databases and how serious/reputable they are?
Or is there something publicly available?

    I really appreciate your help.

The problem is that this is very country-specific. I've done such an exercise for Belgium based on a dozen years of official new birth names, which actually worked quite well. However, for other countries such data can be a lot harder to find.

This can be done is Stata but you will need to write your own program for that. I have no direct experience with this sort of thing but the results will depend on the quality of the conversion probabilities. That said, I suspect that even if the database is reputable, you would still need to come up with a way to validate the results.
