  • SSC install timeout

    Hi,

Should be simple question that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

I've just changed jobs and I'm trying to install some custom commands onto my new laptop. Unfortunately, when I do I get a timeout error.

I thought at first it was because I didn't have admin rights, but IT gave me rights for a few hours and it still didn't work. I then thought perhaps I needed to enter http proxy details, but IT insist we don't have any and therefore nothing should be selected on the internet preferences page. Unfortunately they're not familiar with the software to help me.

I've also tried changing the location of my ado folder but that's not made a difference either and sadly several days working on this on and off has meant this is my last resort. Can anyone help?

    Thanks
    Chantil

You can always go to the ssc repository (https://ideas.repec.org/s/boc/bocode.html), download the program, put the files in the ado folder and restart Stata.

Thanks, at least that gets round the problem. :-)

Ok, I'm obviously being really dense this morning... How do you save the files as anything other than a text file? (I click the link and they open in text format rather than download) Is that right?

The files are usually just plain (ASCII) text files. Thus, you just save them as .ado or .sthlp,

.txt is my only option (well that or html). Maybe I'll have to try form my laptop at home and hope that gives me more options

I'd get on to StataCorp technical support to work out what's happening here. Downloading SSC stuff with a browser is possible but usually a bad strategy.
It's much easier and more reliable to use ssc.

You can be confident that the ssc command understands Stata files and where they belong excellently. It's no criticism that you can't be at all confident that combination (you + browser) has the same understanding.

                  (Declaration of interest.)

Instead of clicking the link, rightclick it and click "save as" or something along those lines. Or choose "All Files" as document type in notepad.

Nick is right here (as usual). You should update your version of Staat

                      Code:
                      update all
then try again. If it still does not work, contact tech-support.
