  • Stata error message ?

Hello. I am using Stata 14.1 and Windows. I have to collapse a STATAfile - but when I am running the collapse command, STATA replies "file C:\ST_00000001.tmp could not be opened"
Can anyone help me out, it has never happened to me in the past.. Is there anything I can do to move on ? (Thank you.!!)

This is between you and your computer and you may need to consult local IT support. Stata [not STATA] appears to be trying and failing to save a temporary file in C:\.

Very likely you don't have permission to write files in that directory or there is some other problem. I am surprised that Stata thinks it should save in the root directory, which may indicate a faulty installation.

    http://www.stata.com/support/faqs/da...ment-variable/ says more.

I have experienced a similar problem in the past. The issue was that my anti virus program was deleting the temporary file, therefore leading to the error when Stata tries to open the file. My resolution was to temporarily disable active scanning of files when running the command that produces the error.

(For Mcafee, open window and click on real time scanning, then select disable for 15 minutes)

Thank you so much for responding ! I got so frustrated I could tear my head off.
AND : After being a couple of days at work (no stata), I tried to collapse the files again the first thing this morning - just to try - and then it worked..! Without me doing anything!!

Happy to being able to proceed with my work. It is by the way an excellent website Thank you again,
