  • Running Stata on a Linux server with multiple users

Hi. I am trying to figure out the licenses I would need for the following proposal. I am part of a project developing a new bespoke Java based system. I want to hand off the calculation of stats to Stata. Stata would be installed on a Linux box and the application server would connect to the stata box, invoke Stata calling a custom ado command, then retrieve the output back to the appliation server. I would need to be able to have multiple "instances" of stata running at the same time based on the calls generated by the UI.

This behaviour sounds like the "compute server" license, but that has a minimum of 25 users which means the cost would be prohibitive. Would the network license cover this pattern of use? If I had a network license for 10 users, could I have 10 "instances" of Stata running on the same physical machine?

Also, the terms of the network license states it is suitable for users in the same physical site or geographical location. How would this apply to machines in the Amazon AWS cloud - e.g. if I had a 10 user license, had 4 installed on local desktop machines on site in the UK, but had 6 allocated for use on a Linux box hosted in an Amazon AWS virtual private cloud, which is physically located in Dublin for example?
