  • undo does not undo

    Dear all,
surely a minor mishap with Stata SE/14.1, for Windows (64-bit x86-64), but enough to hit my curiosity.
    When I write:
    Code:
    di Carlo
and then click -Undo-, nothing happens.

Conversely, everything works as expected with Stata 12 and 13.

Did somebody experience the same issue?
    Kind regards,
    Carlo

In the do file editor? Works for me. Is Stata up to date?

On my Mac running OS X 10.11.3 with Stata SE/14.1, Edit->Undo and Command-Z both erase as expected in the command and view windows and the do-file editor.

Have you tried the usual hierarchy of cures to obscure problems: quit Stata and relaunch? then if that doesn't return undo to functionality, restart the computer?

If all that fails, upgrade to a Mac.

        Dear Richard and William,
        thanks for your replies.
Actually, the mishap creeps up in the Command window only, whereas -undo- works as expected in the Do file Editor.
Yes, I went through all the usual steps of the suggested check-list for minor problems, but unsuccessfully, so far.
        Besides, Stata is fully updated:
        Code:
        . update query
        (contacting http://www.stata.com)

        Update status
Last check for updates: 13 Mar 2016
New update available: none (as of 13 Mar 2016)
Current update level: 03 Mar 2016 (what's new)

        Possible actions

Do nothing; all files are up to date.

OK, I can clone the problem now (Win 7, Stata 14.1). If I right click in the command window, I get an undo option, but it doesn't work. In Stata 13.1 it does work. Ctrl-Z works in both versions of Stata. You may be a leading contender for the finder of the most esoteric bug of the year award!

Also, I didn't even know there was an undo option in the command window until now.

For what it's worth, on my Mac, the equivalent to right clicking in the command window (control-clicking) brings up a contextual (popup) menu that does not include undo. I haven't been able to find a reference to contextual menus or popup menus in the Stata documentation.

              Dear Richard and William,
Thanks for your interest in this odd issue.
Being hectic in writing Stata codes and invoking -undo- as a frequent fix seems to lead to some unexpected discoveries!
              Kind regards,
              Carlo

If Carlo Lazzaro is referring the same issue as Richard Williams discovered, which is that clicking -undo- does not do anything in the Stata command Window on Windows, this is a bug in Stata 14 and will be fixed in a future update. You can work around the problem by using keyboard combination -Ctrl+Z- for undo and -Ctrl+Y- for redo. If you notice other issues, please contact Stata tech support.

In Stata 14 on Windows, the command Window is rewritten to better handle Unicode. Now it uses the same engine as the Do-file editor. Apparently we overlooked -undo- on the popup menu during the revision.

                  Hua:
Yes, I refer to the same issue reported by Richard.
Thanks for suggesting a temporary fix.
                  Kind regards,
                  Carlo
