  • URGENT: descriptive stats for continuous variable

I want to summarise a continuous variable by categories and then report the chi2 value for the existence of a difference in the continuous variable between the two categories.
for example I want to summarise the log earnings by urban/ rural and get the chi2 to test if a difference in earnings between the two groups is significant. can someone please help me

Descriptive statistics for a continuous variable by categories can be done several ways. You can do -by categorical_variable, sort: summarize continuous_variable-. You can use -tabstat- (see -help tabstat- for detail.)

As for testing for significant differences between groups, a chi square test is not typically used for this purpose. The commonest approach to this would be a t-test, or if you use ranksum statistics, a z-test. So you might need to clarify what you are trying to do here first.

Finally, please read the FAQ. Marking a post urgent, especially shouting it in upper case letters, does not improve your chances of getting a response. In fact some people would find it off-putting and might pass you by just because of it.

I am sorry if this sounded bad, i really didn't mean so.
let me give you more details.
so i am running a heckman two step model for married females. my main dep variable is the cost of marriage which is only realised if the female has been married. the indep variables include edu (4 categories), urban (2 categories), employment (3 categories) and so on.
I have previously calculated a chi2 value for the combined difference in the cost of marriage due to different female characteristics.
      I have obtained these results.
my problem is I have worked on this years ago and I have no recollection of how I have done it or what command i have used
      Variable Mean
      Urban 7.1109
      Rural 7.1494
      Chi2(1) 12.621***
Lowest 25% of sex ratios 6.9266
Highest 25% of sex ratios 7.1647
      Chi2(3) 19.644***
      No education 6.9272
      Less than secondary education 6.9503
      Secondary education 7.2218
      Post secondary education 7.6434
      Chi2(3) 26.7807***
