  • Updating Stata 13 in Windows 10

    I recently "upgraded" to Windows 10. Is there a trick to updating Stata 13? I follow the tried and true routine for updates and get the following error message:

    installing executable files ... Could not move Stata-64.exe to Stata-64_old.exe
    r(695);

    Thanks for your help.

    Do you have admin rights on the computer? If you do, when starting Stata you could right-click, choose run as administrator, and get the job done. If you don't have admin rights, it's not possible to do Stata updates.

      Thanks for your reply. I do have administrative rights as it's just my computer at home. Did right click on the Stata icon and chose "run as admnistrator" when starting Stata but the update process still resulted in that error. There must be something wrong with my Windows 10 settings (I got the free upgrade pushed onto my machine by Microsoft). This probably isn't an issue for the Stata Forum unless someone happens to have some insights into Windows 10. Thanks again for the reply.

        You got Windows 10 pushed onto your computer! That's horrifying! They pushed it? That makes Microsoft a malware site. I'm beginning to see a Mac in my future.

          Wow, that's really unfortunate and microsoft probably isnt giving support. I'm really glad I didn't upgrade too! On a more useful note, when you say you have admin rights, sometimes on my computer it doesnt let me use ssc install, so you might have to manually right click on the stata folder and go to security settings to enable all privileges.

            I had a different experience after upgrading to Windows 10, even though my Stata version is 14. I had it installed in Windows 8, and it worked wonders. A month ago, I upgraded to Windows 10 that same way you described, and my Stata 14 still works wonders. By the way, even some old programs (that didn't work very well under the "old" Windows 8) are now working properly in Windows 10. Therefore, I have no complaints. And I cannot understand the reason a quite recent version of Stata (13) wouldn't behave appropriately in Windows 10, such as the old programs of mine.
            Best regards,

            Marcos

              Like Christos says, you should be able to solve your problem by right-clicking on the Stata installation directory, properties, security, then change it to full permissions for users. Shouldn't have to (running as admin should get around this), but explicitly changing permissions would seem the next step.

              I have a machine that upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 via Windows Updates, and Stata updates fine. Strange that yours is behaving differently.

                  Thanks for all the replies. I changed the permissions and it worked. I'm now up to date (well I still have to buy Stata 14 -- maybe next paycheck).

                    Hello,
                    I started to use STATA at Windows 10 but I'm having some problems with memory. The system refused to allocate more than 1,5 GB to STATA, although I have 4Gb of RAM. Is W10 problematic to STATA users?

                      I installed Stata 13 onto my Windows 10 laptop and it has worked fine without any need to play with the firewall etc. I don't know if you upgraded to windows 10 whether this has caused a problem

                        Marden Campos, seems like you are using 32-bit Stata instead of 64-bit Stata. Type -about- in your Stata command window to see which Stata you installed. If you are using 64-bit Windows 10, then you should install 64-bit Stata.

                        Todo that, run the installer again and choose "Modify", then add the proper 64-bit Stata executable for your license, then run -update all- immediately after install.
