  • Exceeding the Number of Variables Allowed by Stata 12 IC.

I am using Stata IC 12 (up to date) and working on DHS data, I had no problem with working on most of the DHS files for the past years, but currently I can't open the Individual Recode file on Stata because the number of variables in the file(~ 16,000 variables) exceeds the maximum number of variables allowed by Stata IC.

    Here is the error message:

no room to add more variables
Up to 2,048 variables are allowed with this version of Stata. Versions are available that allow up to 32,767 variables.

Is there any way to solve this?

    I would appreciate your help.

    Thank you,

    Abir

what do you mean "solve this"? if you are satisfied with only loading some of the variables, you can do this; see the help for "use"

Thank you Rich, I mean being able to open this file with all the variables not some of them.

There is no way you can cajole Stata 12 IC into loading a file with all of its 16,000 variables. Either you need to settle on a subset of variables whose number is within the IC limit, or you need to purchase the SE or MP flavor of Stata.
