  • Stata14 Icons

    Hi
I have just installed Stata14 and am not happy with the way the icons show on screen. In my previous Stata versions they are (always) small and well-formed. In Stata14 they are marginally larger, but not well-formed (i.e. ill defined – as though there is something not quite right about the pixel definition). This is the case in both the Stata14 window and the Do-file editor. Does anyone have any idea if there is a Stata14 setting I haven’t found yet (e.g. changing fonts or user-interface language makes no difference to the icons)?
    Regards
    Laurence

At a minimum, you should post the exact version of Stata you are running (from the about command) and the operating system and version on which you are running Stata. It seems unlikely that there is a Stata setting such as you describe, but the problem may lie in an interaction between Stata 14 and your operating system. Some newer operating systems are moving to a more resolution-independent way of rendering icons; perhaps this is what is affecting you. With more information, perhaps someone can advise you.

      Dear All,

I face exactly the problem that Laurence describes. I am using Stata/MP 14.0 for Windows (64-bit x86-64) with Win 7 and I have the same issue in two very different machines.

As Joao I am running Stata12, Stata13 and Stata14 on the same PC (all Stata/SE for Windows (64-bit x86-64) running Windows 7). Stata12 and Stata13 have perfectly formed icons, Stata14 does not. It seems unlikely it is an operating system problem (but since it is Microsoft I reserve judgment). Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Laurence Lester has observed that some of the toolbar icons in Stata 14 for Windows are not as sharp and defined as previous versions. In Stata 14 the icons and other UI elements are DPI aware. When Stata is used on a high density display, and when Windows settings increase the DPI beyond 100%, the behavior Laurence described may occur. The flip side is that a typical desktop configuration will not observe the behavior.

For example, if the DPI in Windows is set to 150%, a 16x16 icon needs to be displayed at 24x24 to be proportionally accurate. Unfortunately simply scaling the icon may produce poor results, especially if the icon has diagonals or curves. To solve this we will be embedding custom sized icons for typical DPI scaling settings resulting in properly sized icons with detail. We will include this in a future update.

Thanks James (as often, Stata to the rescue).

Any chance you can make the high PPI icons available also for a PPI scaling of 125%? Right now the hi-res icons kick in at something like 133% scaling. Large lo-res icons at 125% scaling are very pixelated. (I prefer the large icons setting.)
