  • Calculating SE of a rate that is calculated using distinct datasets for numerator and denominator, each which have their own SE

I'm trying to calculate the SE / 95% CI around a hospitalization rate.

I calculated the hospitalization rate by analyzing two distinct dataset. One is a national hospitalization dataset that I use to estimate a hospitalization count (for the numerator) and another is a national population-based survey that I used to estimate a relevant population count (for the denominator).

The issue is that both my numerator and denominator are estimated from distinct samples, so consequently my estimates for numerator and denominator each have their own standard error. Is there an approach to combining the variance in numerator and denominator to permit the calculation of standard error around the rate that others have used?

    Thanks in advance.
