  • Add blank lines to forestplot

    Dear Statalisters,

I am a heavy user of forestplot (part of the ipdmetan package by David Fisher). I do not employ it in its originally intended use of individual patient level data meta analysis, but rather to display odds ratios or mean differences. I think it does the job very well indeed. I have been unable to find any display options that might allow me to insert linebreaks or spaces between sets of data (such as sets of subgroups) to allow ease of reading. Instead of 119 lines of data in (17 lines of analysis in each of 7 arms) being presented as one unreadable block, it would be helpful to insert a blank line in between each set of 17. You might ask what the purpose is of displaying this much data in one plot, and you would be correct to ask this (it is, in fact, at this stage only for a cursory look at the data, but the display question is still valid for more sensibly displayed data). I have tried inserting a dummy 18th variable with no data or data labels, but this still leaves a diamond estimate (with no confidence intervals) at the line of equality. This aids in breaking up the reading of the labelled columns, but is less good at breaking up the forestplot itself.

    Kind regards
    Robert Shaw
