  • individual mean

    Hi all,

    Hello everyone,
I have this question and would like to construct a variable equal to the individual mean :

We would now know your opinion future income. Distribute 100 points among the following alternatives: give a high score to those considered most likely and a low to less likely.
What do you expect to be the average income in next 12 months (distribute 100 points)?”
    • more than 10%
    • between 5 and 10%
    • between 0 and 5%
    • between -5% and 0
    • less than -5%
In a paper with a similar question, I read that they calculate the average as follows:

The individual mean is computed weighting the central value of each bin with the amount of probability mass assigned to that bin.
Unfortunately, however, I cannot figure out how to do it on Stata
Can anyone help me or recommend papers that might help me? Thanks

Have you tried e-mailing the authors of the paper from where you found that procedure?

In addition to the very valid point in #2, the description
The individual mean is computed weighting the central value of each bin with the amount of probability mass assigned to that bin.
is inadequate, since it doesn't tell us what to do for the intervals "less than -5%" and "more than 10%". Also, an extract of your data using dataex would be helpful to others trying to help you with code.
