  • Import TIFF/tfw files for use as a background when mapping data

I have some TIFF satellite images of various nations that come with .tfw files with geocoding information. I have a project that analyzes spatial data, and I'd like to be able to plot some existing lines and points over these images. I've used bmp2dta (which imports and image into Stata) but I haven't found anything to import these files and use them alongside my data. I specifically need to be able to import the images and then reference latitude and longitude points. Does anyone have any advice?

The files come from http://www.maplibrary.org/library/st...rica/index.htm and can be either the "satellite image" or the "trimmed satellite image."

Hi, I also ran into this. But don't have a solution. Meanwhile, this is what I learnt from emailing Stata Tech Support (just in case someone can pick up the hints and push further):

There isn't a way to add an actual imaage as the background to a plot
in Stata, but you might be able to plot the data pulled with -bmp2dta-
by using the -grmap- command. I've never converted a tiff file using
bmp2dta, so I'm not sure if the format (ie long and lat variables) match
what the command is looking for. For more information, please refer to
-help grmap- in Stata. Typically, the map data is taken from shapefiles-
so the data gathered from the tiff might need to be placed in a similar
      format.
