I am testing whether the coefficients for the interaction terms are equal to each other and these are the results.

    Code:
    test [man_id3]0.spouse#0.economic = [woman_id3]0.spouse#0.economic

    Adjusted Wald test

     ( 1) [man_id3]0.spouse#0b.economic - [woman_id3]0.spouse#0b.economic = 0

           F( 1, 1986) = 9.34
                Prob > F = 0.0023

    .
    . test [man_id3]0.spouse#1.economic = [woman_id3]0.spouse#1.economic

    Adjusted Wald test

     ( 1) [man_id3]0.spouse#1.economic - [woman_id3]0.spouse#1.economic = 0

           F( 1, 1986) = 1.00
                Prob > F = 0.3172
Am I correct in interpreting those as:
    • The first test means we can reject the null that both coefficients are equal to one another
    • We cannot reject the null that both coefficients are equal to each other. Specifically, having a spouse that works and being financially insecure leads to a more traditional ideology for both men and women. As in there is no difference between the two coefficients and both coefficients are negatively associated with ideology.

I assume that id3 is coded so higher values mean less traditional ideology.
    • Yes, the first test means you can reject the null that the "working spouse / secure income" correlation with ideology is the same for men and women (i.e. this implies there is a male/female difference in this correlation). In particular, the coefficient for women is not significantly different from zero, but the coefficient for men is significant and positive.
    • Not correct for the second test. The result means you fail to reject the null that the "working spouse / insecure income" correlation with ideology is the same for men and women. But you CANNOT go on to say that "because the value for men is significant and negative, the value for women is negative also."
      • What you can say is that there is a negative correlation between this working/insecure status and ideology for men, but the value for women is too imprecise to say if it is the same as men or not. (Note the confidence interval for this coefficient for women goes from -.65 to .37 -- so we can't say for sure if the true value for women is negative or positive. For the men, it is 95% likely to be negative).
      • In general, failing to reject the null does not imply the two coefficients are actually equal. It just means that we can't say with certainty how they differ from each other.
    Hope that helps.

Thank you very much Kye, that clears up my misunderstanding.
