Adding to an older thread, but I recently discovered that Stata 16 will not open sas7bdat files that are in the compressed format. Stat/Transfer will handle these files or, if you're on a budget, you can use the Microsoft R package RevoScaleR. Depending on the compression that was used, you might be able to use the R haven library, but this did not work for me presumably because binary compression was used. That's what Professor Google tells me, anyhow.

Hua Peng (StataCorp) I can send the file directly or it's available under open licence from from https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/en/catalogue/82M0013X where you can request it. If you prefer I send it, just let me know where to send it. I turned on my email notifications so can respond as soon as I hear back from you.

You'll want the 2015/2016 Public Use Microdata File which should be at the top of the list. I was able to open the bootstrap weight file but get an "unable to parse" error when trying to import hs.sas7bdat which is why I thought it was in a compressed format.
