The error seems to occur with importing the Excel file into Stata - just tried it again to check and see if that was the cause ... sure enough it is. I even tried changing the string to a number format with 2 decimal places in Excel, then changing back to a string prior to importing ...

Rich's code works! Thank you! There are about 50ish examples of errors, about 5000 total (database has about 300k observations), and 50% are "code to long" errors, similar to above.

I can brute force that (and may have to) unless someone has another elegant solution.
